Can't connect and a stable red LED

    Hi
I have a problem now with access to my UMC32-R2, i have 2, and are not linked together.
When i connect the USB, the LED goes red all the time. In the config i can open the ports, but
i got a timeout trying to read. Both modules are updated to the latest 2.4.0.

Before it got red, i had problems writing permanently to the module.. it wrote successfully, but when i unplug
module and plug it again to the USB, opened the ports and read, everything was gone..
Also tried with the 10 pin switch on/off..

But now i can do nothing..

Re: Can't connect and a stable red LED

    Hi Thomas,

Sorry your having problems with your original UMC. The 2 only things that I know that would cause the LED to be constantly red are:

    1) The bootloader pin is on (shorted to ground)

    or

    2) You have 1 or more UMC I/O's configured as an analog input but nothing connected to it.

Since I'm assuming you can see the UMC as a MIDI device in your device manager lets assume #2.

I'm not saying this is your case but 99% of the time, the config utility times out because the UMC is sending
a bunch of random data and is effectively "sampling the air". This is because an update to the configuration enabled
one or more analog inputs yet one or more of those inputs is either disconnected or are misbehaving. Think of it as leaving a guitar plug disconnected with the AMP cranked up to full. This noise essentially floods the MIDI driver and makes it impossible for the utility to communicate with the UMC.

One thing that I have noticed over the last few years is that user forget to remove the flux from their solder joints, then over time the flux breaks down their connections and causes all kinds of havoc. It is even more important in environments with higher humidity. It may work great for a year or so, then as time moves on the residual flux causes all kinds of issues.

Anyways, if you set DIP's 1 thru 9 to the on position and DIP 10 to the off position (Legacy mode) you bypass the internal "flashed" configuration and instead use the DIP pack. In this case 1-9 in the on position sets it for Digital input with pull up. Once this is set you should be able to restart your PC and connect to it via the Configuration utility without any problem.

Please let me know if that was helpful and we can take it from there.

    Best,

    Kenneth

    Hi there,

bought my UMC a little while ago and have just got around to setting it up. Had a similar problem to the above post and set Pin #10 to the off position. And now have no red light. Ok I think. UMC is recognised by windows no problem and by config utility. Able to open MIDI ports. But cannot read from UMC, just get UMC32+ read timeout 1. It's probably something obvious but would greatly appreciate any advice you can give.

    Many thanks.

    Hi,

just to add to the above post. UMC isn't recognised by my mac running os x 10.6.8. Im sure when I first got it I was able to find it under the audioMIDI setup application. Not sure if this is in any way linked to the above problem.

    Thanks.

If you are using an original UMC with the dip pack (last unit shipped was summer of 2010), make sure you are using the last available firmware for that device http://www.halemicro.com/FirmwareArc...reArchive.html. The latest config utility will not work with the original UMC, make sure you use firmware v2.40 with config utility v1.13. Hope that helps.

    Best,

    Kenneth
